It’ll Work If I Believe

January 2, 2009

Happy new year, all.

UGGGGGGHHHH this comic took much longer than it should have thanks to a fuse blowing in my room halfway through.  Save your Photoshop files, kids!

    This comic isn’t terribly funny.

It’s like a mediocre newspaper comic with a few bleeped out curse words and indirect sexual references, just to keep things “edgy for the web generation”.

Sorry, try again on a harder difficulty setting.

  2. Alex says:

Ouch, man. I’m tryin’. I hope you give me another chance, but it seems like you’ve made up your mind already. I agree that the strips I’ve put up seem “newspapery”, but that’s how I learned to write ‘em, and I’m learning how to make my humor more, uh, “internet”? If that makes sense? You can’t please ‘em all, I guess. If you don’t like me, just move on. I’m not forcing you to read.

  3. Seb says:

I think that’s a bit of a harsh judgement. I like the comic; the style of the humour and art, newspapery vibes or not. Whatever those may be.

  4. Brett says:

I disagree, Kevin. I think there is a lot of potential here. It’s certainly well drawn and colored. Give the characters a chance to find their voices.

My two cents is to make Herman look a bit less weird. It’s a distraction (at least to me). He’s supposed to be a superstar athlete, not zippy the pinhead.

  5. Alex says:

Eh, that’s more of a problem of me drawing him since I was nine. He’ll probably smooth out and reconcile with the rest of my style a bit as I go along.

  6. Kevinsux says:

Oh hey kevin guess what your mom called…she says your an idiot… this comic is awesome keep up the great work Alex

  7. Visulth says:

I agree with Brett–I think the art is really good on all the characters except for Herman.

  8. Kate says:

They’re all good characters, and the art isn’t a worry. At all.
Ignore the naysayers. If you want to make them all stick figures that’s cool by me.

  9. seb says:

woah, third poster, i think your parents have a good taste in nick names :D

  10. BCphilosopher says:

I think the strip has potential, nothing about it wows me exactly but you are still finding your voice. The premise is a bit thin but once again you could go somewhere with it given time.
And for a previous commentor, not sure why but that “your mom called” that was good, just lame enough to be ironically funny.

  11. some guy says:

try not making the characters intentionally ugly

there’s a reason everyone on tv is pretty or at least passable

it’s because it makes them more entertaining to look at

can the damn dad at least get a haircut

also, interesting things happening would be nice

  12. another guy says:

    so what they are ugly?

it makes the comic more humorous and interesting.
this isn’t tv, it’s the internet and it’s a comic.
everyone on the internet can be really good looking or really ugly and still entertaining.
look at any comic, most of the time the main characters won’t be good looking, though there will be other characters who are. thats where the hilarity comes from.

though Herman could probably do with a haircut.

  13. Rainbow-Nunchuks says:

Lol i just realized i spelled nunchuk wrong in all my other comments

  14. Dexter says:

I kind of like the newspaper style… this is truly fantastic so far for something I’ve just stumbled onto from a (rather interesting) banner ad.

Full marks: interesting art, engaging characters, some semblance of story continuity, and most importantly, actually made me laugh. Would recommend to friends.

Also, I admire your openness to criticism, especially when someone is an overly-blunt prick about it.
