Nothing makes a woman unattractive faster than tobacco.
Maybe for you, but some of us have an open mind about tobacco.
Agreed. This whole comic suddenly took a big downturn for me.
While men smoking is of course Marlboro-man cool.
Personally, if I knew I was an inhabitant of a comic strip, I’d be using something harder than cigarettes….
(Or has that aspect of Penny’s abilities been retconned or only exists when it makes for a good joke?)
Well, we already knew Penny was a self-destructive and morally questionable crazyhead. People just tend not to notice because her meta jokes are funny.
Eh well, I don’t approve of smoking either, but since Penny’s a cartoon, she presumably doesn’t need to worry about cancer, heart disease and emphysema. So for me it doesn’t outweigh the total AWESOMENESS that is her character, here and elsewhere.
All I can think of when I see characters smoking in visual media is the rancid stench that accompanies them and sticks to their clothes and hangs in the air.
Because the #1 point is whether or not Penny is attractive to men. How dare someone inject realism and flaws into a character!
I can’t wait to see where her self-destructive habits take the plot. Carry on!
Actually, I’ve found that smoking seems much more appealing to me now that I’ve seen a popular webcomic character doing it.
Her virtual lungs are gonna be filled with tar soon.
lol nice band reference…^_^
Man, no one smokes AND reads webcomics? If she wants to kill her liver and make potentially life ruining decisions, that’s cool. But as soon as she wants to kill her lungs and NOT inhibit her basic funtions, EWWW? She’s a girl in high school who smokes. Personally, I think it’s a cool development.
Hahaha, I can imagine Penny’s voice while making fun of her mother.
Overindulging in drink is self-destructive, but it is a classic set-up for scenarios with funny consequences. Smoking just means that she’s a bad person.
I’m surprised that everybody in the comments is surprised. Me, I’ve been surprised that she didn’t smoke (until now). Penny’s never been a good role model. And that’s fine with me, because I don’t think every “good guy” in a comic needs to be a good role model.
BTW, I find it funny how Penny is old enough to smoke, but not old enough to drink — yet guess which is getting her in trouble with readers. And not one person here has mentioned the much more morally reprehensible fact that, hello? She’s joining a cockfighting ring!!
Smoking just means that she’s a bad person.
No, smoking means she has a vice. Joining a cockfighting ring means she’s a bad person.
I’m a non-smoker myself, but I think whether a person smokes or not is their business, really. I can’t really see any benefit to smoking, but it’s something people do regardless, and comics are under no obligation to paint a world filled with rainbows and fluffy bunnies.
Anyway, I just hope this isn’t heading into a “beat the reader over the head with how evil smoking is” arc. The comments section is already doing a good job of that.
She knows she´s a cartoon figure so she knows that smoking isn´t bad for her health as long as the creator doesn´t let her have cancer for example. Same for drinking alot, though she had seen what could happen to her if she drinks too much (not knowing if she had sex now or not). Though the moment he does give her cancer cause she smokes, she would call BULLSHIT!. XDDD
The thing that struck me was that her best friend didn’t know that she smoked. How are you best friends with someone for so long and not know something like that about them? Does Kate have anosmia or something?
My explanation is she took it up recently. After all, they’re still young enough to be trying these sorts of things out for the first time.
Holy shit! James Rye! It’s me, Hobo! Whacky!
Anyways. I am not surprised at all about this, because she is in high school. I would be surprised if she didn’t smoke, honestly. Maybe it’s just my school, but I know about, six people maybe who don’t smoke, so the exceptions are always more surprising than not. I’m also a bit confused on if this comic is canon or not, because of the last panel. Did she really join the cockfighting ring, or is this… like, some one-off joke? Did she really take up smoking? Is Murder Bus for Dollface a real band? I just don’t know.
It’s not the start of a story and I’m probably never going to mention it again, if that’s what you’re asking.
Also Murder bus is a parody of a real band.
Jesus! Hobo! What are you doing here? Here are no zombies, no wait, i remember somethign similar to zombies some stripes back… Whacky! XD
I would still find it funny if you use the smoking part again for some 4th wall breaking:
*You´ve got cancer now, Penny.*
Penny: “WHAT? WHY?”
*Well, cause you smoke… and i´m out of cheap drama ideas.*
Penny: “So just cause i smoked ONCE in some strip waaaaay back and you´ve got no ideas where to go with this story, you just give me frikking CANCER?”
*Yeeeeeaaahhh, pretty much~*
Penny: “Look, if i give you some new ideas, will you please please please not let me have cancer, please?”
*Uhm, is that okay as creator to take ideas from his creation?*
Penny: “Better than cancer. Deal?”
I’ve been a fan for about, six months or so, I think. Found it off another site that I forget the name of… Anyways, this is cuh-razy.
Okay, I was worried for a few seconds. I think that’d make a real… weird arc. And yeah, I know Murder Bus is a parody… but it should totally be real!
Wow, everyone is up in arms about the smoking but not the cock fighting? Seriously? So Penny chooses to smoke… it’s her lungs. So long as she isn’t purposely blowing smoke into other people’s faces and isn’t doing it in enclosed spaces where other’s don’t have a choice about the second hand smoke, then what’s the big deal.
This is a comic, Penny is not a real person, if people actually view a comic character as a role model then they might wish to reevaluate their own lives. Not to mention their priorities. I mean seriously… “Hey underage drinking to excess is fine, hey cock fighting is fine, but smoking… now you’ve crossed the line!”
Seriously people, try using that thing that sits on top of your shoulders for a change.
Incidentially the WHO has a new batch of 16 pics going up on 75% of all cigarette packs.
If I went through half the entertaining bullshit Penny has to go through, I’d smoke too. And I already smoke.
Why does anyone care about the social issues here. This is a comic.
If you don’t like the joke then thats fine, but stay on topic. These aren’t real people.
Besides, people need to mind their own business.
According to a NY Times article on Barack Obama on Dec. 29, 2008, 21% of Americans smoked in 2008, compared with 28% in 1988.
Yes, smoking is going down, but its very clear that a large amount of people still smoke.
Why should popular culture not reflect society?
When I read the first comment I could swear the person said “othing makes a woman unattractive faster than TABASCO”… Lol.
Got to say those cock fights are actually pretty entertaining
I went to one once in the Phillippines and won like 20 pesos off my cousins bird
Said once a few years back that it takes a moron to start smoking. Took me 19 years to kick that habit (been “clean” about 1 year now) and I STILL want a cigarette occasionally.
Beyond thinking that it takes a moron to start, I really couldn’t care less as long as you don’t blow it in people’s faces.
As for “indoor smoking”? Don’t go on someone else’s PRIVATE PROPERTY and expect everyone else to conform to your wishes. Your property? Sure. Public property? Sure. Otherwise, no.
(restaurants and stores are private property, people)
Penny, while hilarious, is not a good role model. At all. This has been established. Drinking to get drunk, smoking, driving drunk, laughing at the idea that she might still be a virgin when she doesn’t have a steady relationship, cockfighting, … it’s a little hard to say she’s a paragon of virtue. If I knew her in real life, I’d probably enjoy interacting with her from time to time but would definitely not want to be her friend. In a comic, she’s awesome – in no small part because she knows she’s in a comic. So… this doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers some others.
And this from a guy who HATES smoking so passionately that he wishes all tobacco products would vanish off the face of the earth. I don’t even think people should smoke in their own homes if they have children or non-smoking relatives living with them.
