Theater kids LOVE Rent.  I always thought this would happen if I ever told one of them I thought it was just “OK”.

This makes me want to find some theater kids JUST so I can tell them that I’ve never even seen Rent and have no desire to see it whatsoever. Perhaps I’ll inadvertently usher in the theater apocalypse with the likes of Shakespeare rising from the dead. Good thing I know how to kill zombies

  2. Tekeeler says:

Well guess they’d try and hang me because I’ve never heard of Rent before.

  3. Zt107 says:

Rent! …. rent …. What is rent?

Oh well, It wont beat Monthy Python & the Holy Gail! Best… Movie… EVER

  4. Laurel Raven says:

Eerie…the curly headed guy in the last pannel reminds me of Donnald Southerland at the end of the ‘70 remake of Invasion of the Body Snachers.

  5. Alex says:

Correct ding ding ding ding ding

  6. Sanjay says:

Some theater kids are kind of sick of other theater kids and their love of rent.

  7. Iggy says:

I second Sanjay; as a former thespian, enough is enough, geez.

I suppose the obsession lies with the “Rent” characters’ romanticized “struggling artist” life style. TOTALLY overrated.

Tekeeler, if you want a quick synopsis of “Rent,” watch the musical bit at the beginning of “Team America.” My job is done here.

  8. Iggy says:

Oh, and Zt107, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is currently in musical form on Broadway in New York City entitled “Spamalot.”

  9. Sarius says:

Haha, aww, I love Rent. I’m not an actor though. I’m just in charge of the bands/music.

  10. Tim says:

I am a theater kid. I *hate* Rent. I submit to you that any theater kid who thinks Rent is above criticism doesn’t have a firm grasp on what a good play actually is.

Not to bash anyone who does like it. That’s totally fine. But come on, the it’s far from perfect.

  11. Magugag says:

WHY has no one mentioned how hilarious that punchline is? This one made me genuinely laugh.

  12. MrGBH says:

I think everybody’s too busy commenting on wheter they’ve heard of this Rent thing. I’ve got no idea, but I’ve had the punchline said to me on many occasions, mostly when I point out that I’ve never seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
And can I shamelessly plug my new Blogspot, the place for my random fiction that I write?

  13. Kitty says:

that face in the last panel is freaking BRILLIANT. /admire

  14. Author_Ninja says:

This is pretty much the same reaction I get when I tell people I hate the Beatles.

  15. EEnEfreak says:

    @ MrGBH’d lack of Holy Grail-ness:

    *gasp* Blaphemer! HRROOOAAHHH

  16. DCS says:

“Rent” was just an updated knock-off of Puccini’s “La Boheme”, and not even a very good one at that. I am a theater geek, and I was unimpressed. Vastly prefer “Spamalot”, “Cats”, “Phantom”, and “Wicked”!

Found my way here from the banner off “Girl Genius”. Great stuff, Alex!

  17. jenna says:

    cannot… stand… Rent….

  18. Ethd says:

You know, I was at school the other day. We’re singing “Seasons of Love” in choir and when someone asked, I said that I don’t really like “Rent.”
I think I almost got kicked out of choir. At the very least, almost destroyed by the biggest Rent fan in there.
See… it’s not just theater kids.

  19. Jykcor says:

I am the second biggest fan of rent ever, but I know from personal experience that Most of my friends (yes, I do a lot of Musical theatre) in shows dont like it much.

I guess they dont get the message.

  20. Trey says:

Rent has a message? I personally thought “Team America” did a great job of explaining “Rent” to those of us who had never seen it before. Quite accurate.

Oh, and by the way, the “HROOOOAAAHHH!” noise, I am guessing, is the EXACT same noise Godzilla makes when he is making Japan a smoldering ruin. Am I correct in this assumption?

  21. xhado123 says:

I am a Theatre kid, majoring in Musical Theatre and everything…

Rent is just a musical. It is a pretty good one, too. I could go into detail as to why it isn’t the greatest thing since the creation of broadway, but that would be like Tesla sharing all of his ideas. Not all theatre people love rent.

    Just so ya know.

    Love the comic!

  22. hideousdwarf says:

Not a theatre kid, actually a bando but ya know…havn’t seen rent, but to anyone who hasn’t seen Monty Python

WATCH IT!!! Not just Holy Grail, or the movies but all their skits too!! Also, love spamalot.
    Okay, I’m done ranting.
@xhado123, would that be like his death ray…that exploded?

  23. gamewinner07 says:

Another Theater Kid, hate rent, but then again, I’m just a techie that thinks actors are below him (Not really, but Dancers are.)

To Trey, watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers. When the pod people find a non-pod person, they all point at them and make a screeching noise.

  24. Man, this is totally true.

I mean, that’s my opinion of RENT. and this is the reaction I get. The worst part is how much I hate the song the strip is named after…

    Hilarious. :)

  25. OKGrype says:

Love how people love to look down their noses at people who don’t like what they like. That is above all the message I get. I don’t have to know anything about “Rent” just know that I’ve been on the receiving end of that myself. Got to love em anyways.

  26. Rainbow-Nunchuks says:

wth is rent? never heard of it

  27. Puck says:

I’m a theatre kid! Or I was. And I did not and do not like RENT.
If you want an excellent story, go watch La Boheme!

  28. Indigo says:

Love the Donald Sutherland Body Snatchers reference.
