UHM Pt. 16: What An Appropriate Band Name

October 27, 2009

I hope people get Penny’s gag, it might be a little esoteric.

And yes, I’m aware I misspelled “didgeridoo”.

Oh, and this arc isn’t over, by the way.  We’ve still got four more strips, so hold on :)

Nooo! It’s like the entire story arc was just there so that we could unveil this gag in a cruel twist of fate!

How could they be so impossibly musically inclined?!

  2. Nurian says:

And the bias of high school faculty against rock continues. And Vanilla Ice’s.

  3. Flapjack says:

    …..WHO THE HELL IS ADAM!?

  4. leeroy junkins says:

    I almost didn’t get Penny’s gag

  5. Jorgen says:

I guess once you have a good sweet but bumbling sidekick to the comic villain, you hold him close and never let him go.

  6. Baughbe says:

    Bassoooooon!

Rage levels rising. Must find sock puppet. Before its too late…………..

  7. spenserl says:

    i dont get it….

  8. Adam says:

All I have to say is IN YOUR FACE Alasdair.

  9. Ramon says:

hmmmmm i wonder if the real Adam could do a four minute bassoon solo.
And i love how the Antagonist consist of all antagonist, with the exception of Adam….he’s just a sidekick(villain form)

  10. Adam says:

Ramon, the answer would be yes.

  11. Zt107 says:

6th panel, guy on far left: death glare … Has he said anything this arc?

  12. spenserl says:

Ah, metahumor! It reminds me of this joke:

“Three scientists of different disciplines encounter a perfectly normal situation. The first two say something appropriate to their respective fields. The third one says something entirely useless and unexpected for the situation yet humorous and bizarrely appropriate for his occupation.

    And one on nationalities…
Three people of different nationalities walk into a room. The first two say something witty and intelligent, while the third insults all of his countrymen by responding like an idiot. ”

It hasn’t been updated in forever, but it’s got some great stuff. As a chorister, I particularly love the “Choir Guide”! XP

  14. Steve says:

I don’t get the “gag”. Someone explain it?

  15. LaughingTarget says:

For those who don’t get the gag, here it is; it won’t be funny if it has to be explained, so don’t read this if you still want to enjoy the joke:

Penny is a character that’s so smart, she’s fully aware she is a fictional character that exists only in Alex’s head. She became aware of the setup of the joke because she knows she’s in a comic and, thus, is well versed in the operations of the world.

I would also like to point out that Penny really didn’t know it, Alex did, and only gave away the joke in the second panel because Penny is Alex; and maybe Alex is Penny, but after his near mental breakdown in a previous comic about talking to himself through a comic character, I don’t want him to think too much on it.

  16. I’m more confused than ever.

  17. leeroy junkins says:

I thought the gag was from part 9 of this arc when the blonde said to Kate Oh, look, It’s the last place winners and then in this strip Kate said they can’t possibly lose so they didn’t. They won the last place.

  18. Geckomayhem says:

Yes, Penny is referring back to a previous strip, as she is wont to do at times. The irony is that they really didn’t have a chance against the “joke”: last place winners. What’s ironic though, is that it wasn’t last place; it just wasn’t first place. But hey, everyone is equally good in their own way though, right?

  19. Jack Faire says:

I thought the joke was referring to the fact that the speakers which had blown out partway into their set weren’t on thus no one but the first band to play would have been heard for the most part.

  20. JET73L says:

Mim wouldn’t have been close enough to snatch up the trophy (and, for that matter, the cart) before Panel 4. Perhaps the cart was rolled across and past the stage to be put in the waiting limousine?

On to something more relevant: ADAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!
